A juror passed out at the sight of a horrific photo shown during the trial of a woman accused of murdering a heavily pregnant bride in an attempt to steal the unborn baby. The trial came to a dramatic halt when prosecutors showed pictures of Angelikque Sutton’s mutilated body as medical examiner Declan Mcguone testified in the New York court yesterday.
The forensic pathologist was pointing out the victim’s detached uterus and the baby’s umbilical cord just feet from the jury box when the middle-aged woman collapsed, reports the New York Daily News.
Pregnant bride Ms Sutton was allegedly murdered by Ashleigh Wade who slashed her throat and cut open her stomach to remove her unborn baby in the ‘womb raider’ murder in the Bronx, New York.
After the juror fainted just after 3pm on Thursday, the judge adjourned the trial until the today.
Ms Sutton was on her way to marry Patrick Bradley when she dropped by the home of childhood friend Ashleigh Wade, who had a calculated plan to murder her but keep the baby alive in 2015, prosecutors said.
The bride was nearly nine months pregnant and believed Wade had a wedding gift for her, but instead she slashed her friend’s voice box so she could not scream, before removing her uterus, the court heard.
Wade has pleaded not guilty to the charges and her murder trial began on Monday.
Officer Jonathan Polanco Ortiz testified that the crime scene he went to that day “left a mark on his soul”. He said Wade confessed to the murder as soon as police arrived.
Ms Sutton’s husband-to-be was sat in the gallery listening to the grisly details of his fiancee’s death.
Wade faces life in prison if found guilty.
